L.A. Sports Coverage

During the 2021-22 NBA season, I served as the lead recaps writer for Silver Screen and Roll, the SB Nation team blog covering the Los Angeles Lakers. In addition to writing recaps for the majority of Lakers games to be published shortly after the final buzzer, I also contributed newsdesk articles and occasionally analysis of players and statistical trends on the team as well. Additionally, I formatted each post to be shared on social media and for SEO keywords using Vox Media’s Chorus content management system. Silver Screen and Roll is one of SB Nation’s flagship team blogs, averaging two million views per month.

I had a similar role at DodgerBlue.com, the widest-read independent Dodger blog in existence, during the 2019 season. I wrote newsdesk, preview, feature and analysis articles and formatted them in the Wordpress.org content management system while formatting with a large emphasis on SEO. In 2018, I also reported on several Los Angeles-area professional sports team as a digital intern with NBC Los Angeles, which included compiling articles with dynamic multimedia elements in the NBC CMS like the ones linked below.

Silver Screen & Roll

  • The Lakers are just as frustrated as we are that they can’t figure out ways to win

This is one of several articles I was assigned to write where the angle was weaving postgame quotes from several players together to find a common theme and make an overarching point. In this case, I was provided quotes obtained firsthand by my boss, a Lakers beat writer, about the Lakers’ frustrations with losing. I included statistics and references to my recaps of recent games to add context to those quotes.

  • Lifeless Lakers demolished by Nuggets in third straight loss

This is one of the many Lakers game recaps I wrote during the 2021-22 season for Silver Screen and Roll. I not only provided a detailed summary of the game and the stat lines of key players but also often wove in my own commentary to contextualize the win or (usually) the loss in the scope of the Lakers’ season to that point. I also linked back to several relevant articles written by me and my colleagues covering storylines that popped up during the game, and embedded tweets containing highlights and observations from the game.

  • Russell Westbrook Rumors: Knicks have had ‘no Russ conversations,’ Rockets still want first-round pick in any salary dump

This is an example of a newsdesk post I would do, aggregating and compiling trade rumors from around NBA media circles and providing context to them. I embedded tweets, formatted quotes from insiders as block quotes, added my own analysis and insights, and linked back to relevant previous aggregation that Silver Screen and Roll had done on this story.

  • Report: Anthony Davis, LeBron James not ‘aligned’ with Rob Pelinka on inaction at trade deadline

This is an example of taking a nugget that an NBA insider would share on TV and turning it into a relevant story by using context of how the season got to this point. In this case, the story was about LeBron James and Anthony Davis not on the same page as Rob Pelinka, so I provided context from previous reporting and insight into that dynamic as to why that might be the case.

Dodger Blue

  • Dodgers News: Clayton Kershaw Honored To Pass Childhood Idol Andy Pettitte On All-Time Strikeouts List

This is an example of a news aggregation post I would write based off a postgame quote from a Dodgers player, taking that quote and adding relevant context around the soundbite. In this case, I briefly examined the careers of Clayton Kershaw and Andy Pettitte after Kershaw passed Pettitte in career strikeouts.

  • Dodgers Injury Updates: Max Muncy, Alex Verdugo Expected To Return During Orioles Series; Rich Hill & Dustin May Scheduled To Face Batters

This is an example of a routine roundup of relevant injury news concerning Dodgers players, providing the latest updates on short-term and long-term rehab stints using quotes from key Dodgers figures such as manager Dave Roberts.

  • Analysis: Should Rich Hill’s Injury Put Dodgers In The Market To Trade For Top Starting Pitcher?

This is a column I did after Dodgers pitcher Rich Hill’s June 2019 arm injury depleted what already looked like a diminished starting rotation for the team. I argued that the Dodgers should not trade for a top-tier starting pitcher to replace Hill, and sure enough, they did not, opting to strengthen their bullpen and bring up top prospect Dustin May from the minors instead.

  • Dodgers News: Joe Kelly Believes Ability To Command Fastball Was Key to Midseason Turnaround

This is a newsdesk story I did taking quotes from a player about his performance issued to our beat writer at a Dodgers postgame press conference. I would provide statistics to add needed context about what the player was saying. In this case, I contrasted Joe Kelly’s early-season struggles to his recent hot streak, using his quotes to frame what had changed.

  • MLB Trade Deadline Rumors: Giants Having ‘Sell’ Conversations But Don’t Appear Likely To Trade Madison Bumgarner, Will Smith Or Others

This is a news aggregation post I wrote surrounding recent trade rumors in the buildup to the 2019 trade deadline. I would take reports dispersed by insiders in articles or on Twitter and fit them within the broader context of the teams involved. In this case, I examined where the Dodgers and longtime rival Giants could work out a trade to get the Dodgers some key pitching help.

NBC Los Angeles

  • Rams and Chargers NFL Stadium Construction Hits Major Milestone

This is an example of where I was given the raw materials for a broadcast story and asked to turn it into a longer digital feature, allowing me to add additional context and details that might not make it into the broadcast package.

  • Lakers Unveil Jerseys for 2018-19 Season

This is a digital-only story I wrote covering the Lakers’ announcement of their biggest jersey rebrand in nearly two decades after the signing of LeBron James in 2018. The story was turned into a quick anchor VO segment on that night’s newscast.

  • Artist Paints Over LeBron Mural After It's Vandalized Again

This was a big ongoing story throughout the day that received coverage from multiple reporters during the evening and nighttime newscasts. My article, using visuals and interviews from reporters and camera crews in the field, anchored the station’s digital coverage of the story.

  • LAFC, LA Galaxy Ramping Up for MLS Crosstown Rivalry Rematch

I was assigned to search online to see how both of the Los Angeles-area MLS teams were ramping up for their second game against each other through different online promotions, player visits to L.A. landmarks, and pop-up merchandise shops. It turned into a digital-exclusive story that was one of the most-read on the site on the day of publication.
